January 10, 2020 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We have begun our unit on sea life in preparation for our trip to the New England Aquarium on Thursday, January 30th.  Information about the trip went home in your child’s folder today.  Please don’t forget to send in the $10 to cover the cost of the trip.  Checks can be made payable to Burlington Public Schools.  Please let me know if you are interested in being a chaperone for this trip.

We will be having our Annual Fish Day on Friday, January 31st.  Students will get to visit other Kindergarten classrooms to complete various fish projects.  We will need extra help that day.  The volunteer time will be around 9-10am.  If you are available and interested in helping, please let me know so I can put you on the schedule.  If you have not completed a CORI at the Central Office (High School), please consider doing it so you can volunteer.

The children have started making their own aquarium scenes, which will look amazing hanging on our back wall. They are also working on an innovation of Eric Carle's, A House for Hermit Crab.  We have been learning many neat facts about fish too!

We enjoyed a special visit from Mr. D. this week.  He read us a book about making friends and did a snowman activity with us.  The students had a lot of fun helping to build the snowman!

I sent home half of the Kindergarten sight words as part of a snowman/carrot game today.  Please be sure to practice these words with your child often so they become more familiar.  You can also write out the words two times on cards and make a memory game (only use 10-15 words at a time) and be sure to look for these words on signs, around the house, in books, etc.  The more students read and write these words, the more automatic they will become!

I also sent some addition fluency fact cards home.  Students should cut them out and practice them at home so they can answer each math fact quickly (the goal is less than 3 seconds each).  Students should not write the answers on the cards so that they can reuse them again and again.  The subtraction cards can be cut out and saved for later on.

The Francis Wyman Used Bookstore will be open this Wednesday, January 15th.  Students are welcome to bring in 25 cents to buy a book or bring in a used book from home to trade for another book.  This is completely optional.

We have extended the Scholastic Book Club order due date until Monday, for those of you who may still be interested in ordering books.

Wishlist items:  small brown paper lunch bags and uncoated white paper plates

Have a great weekend!

Melanie
